Snook
⚠️ Catch & Release OnlyThe king of inshore fishing in Southwest Florida. Snook are powerful fighters found around mangroves, bridges, and passes. They're ambush predators that stage along current edges and structure.

Redfish
Open Year-RoundRed Drum are prized inshore game fish recognizable by the spot(s) near their tail. They cruise grass flats, oyster bars, and mangrove shorelines — often tailing in shallow water where sight-fishing is possible.

Tarpon
⚠️ Catch & Release OnlyThe Silver King — Sanibel's most spectacular game fish. Tarpon migrate through the passes and along the beaches from April through July, offering world-class sight-fishing opportunities. These prehistoric fish can exceed 150 pounds and leap spectacularly when hooked.

Spotted Seatrout
Open Year-RoundA staple of grass flat fishing around Sanibel. Seatrout are cooperative biters and excellent table fare. They hold over seagrass beds year-round, making them reliable targets for anglers of all skill levels.

Sheepshead
In SeasonA winter favorite with distinctive black-and-white stripes. Sheepshead gather around pilings, bridges, and docks where they feed on barnacles and crustaceans. They're tricky biters but excellent eating.

Season: Open Mar 1 – Apr 30 only

Size limit: 14" minimum
Mangrove Snapper
Open Year-RoundOne of the best-eating fish in local waters. Mangrove Snapper (Gray Snapper) are found around structure — docks, bridges, mangrove roots, and artificial reefs. They're line-shy and require finesse.

Size limit: 10" minimum
Grouper
❌ Gag Closed / Red check FWCGag Grouper and Red Grouper are prized offshore targets accessible from Sanibel by boat. They inhabit hard-bottom reefs, ledges, and artificial structure in 30–80 feet of water. Powerful fighters that head for the rocks when hooked.

Season: Gag Grouper: Open Jun 1 – Dec 31; Red Grouper: Open year-round with closures

Pompano
Open Year-RoundOne of the finest eating fish in the Gulf. Pompano run along the beaches and through the passes, especially during spring and fall. They feed on sand fleas, clams, and small crabs in the surf zone.

Size limit: 11" fork length minimum
Jack Crevalle
Open Year-RoundPound for pound, one of the hardest-fighting fish in these waters. Jack Crevalle are aggressive predators that travel in schools, blitzing bait on the surface. Not great eating but incredible sport on light tackle.

Ladyfish
Open Year-RoundThe 'Poor Man's Tarpon' — ladyfish jump, fight hard, and are everywhere. They're the perfect species for kids and beginners, plus they make excellent cut bait for bigger game. Often the first fish you'll catch on Sanibel.

Where to Fish

Blind Pass
The narrow pass between Sanibel and Captiva where San Carlos Bay meets the Gulf. Strong currents concentrate bait and predators. One of the best shore-fishing spots in Southwest Florida.
Causeway Islands
The series of man-made islands along the Sanibel Causeway. Easy access, free parking, and surprisingly productive fishing from shore or by wading the grass flats.
Lighthouse Beach
The historic Sanibel Lighthouse pier area at the eastern tip of the island. Great shore fishing with access to the pass between San Carlos Bay and the Gulf.
Tarpon Bay
A protected estuary on the bay side of Sanibel with excellent mangrove-lined shorelines. Accessible by kayak from Tarpon Bay Explorers. Great sight-fishing territory.
Pine Island Sound
The expansive shallow sound between Sanibel/Captiva and Pine Island. Miles of grass flats, oyster bars, and mangrove islands. The heart of Sanibel backcountry fishing.
Ding Darling Wildlife Refuge
Kayak fishing along the mangrove channels of the J.N. 'Ding' Darling National Wildlife Refuge. Special regulations apply — no motorized boats in many areas.
Sanibel Pier
The fishing pier at Lighthouse Beach Park. When open, it provides deep-water access without a boat. Popular with families and casual anglers.
Bowman's Beach
A quieter beach on the Gulf side of Sanibel with good surf fishing. Less crowded than Lighthouse Beach, with productive troughs between sandbars.
Captiva Pass
The deep pass at the north end of Captiva Island. One of the top tarpon fishing spots in Florida. Boat access only — strong currents.

Wade Fishing
