The Mucky Duck Is Almost Back — What We Know About Captiva's Iconic Restaurant

By Sanibel Island Explorer · 4 min read

If you have ever watched a sunset on Captiva Island, chances are you did it from the Mucky Duck.

The iconic beachfront pub at the end of Andy Rosse Lane has been a Captiva institution since 1976 — known for cold beer, crunchy grouper sandwiches, and some of the most spectacular sunset views in all of Southwest Florida. Celebrities, locals, and first-time visitors have all shared the same experience: toes in the sand, drink in hand, watching the sky turn orange over the Gulf.

Then the hurricanes came.

What Happened

Hurricane Ian in September 2022 was the first blow. But the Mucky Duck is resilient — owner Andreas Bieri began rebuilding.

Then came Hurricane Helene in late September 2024, burying the restaurant in sand. Two weeks later, Hurricane Milton blew out the beachside walls and windows, exposing the interior completely. The roofline sagged. The kitchen was destroyed.

Three major hurricanes in two years. Most people would have walked away.

Bieri did not.

Where Things Stand

As of early March 2026, the Mucky Duck is on the cusp of reopening.

"Soon," Bieri told the News-Press. "I'm not going to say a date because every time I do, something hits me out of left field. Maybe a week, couple of weeks."

The building has been rebuilt to look exactly like the original — dark wood, English-style pub, same layout. Lee County designated the Mucky Duck as a historic structure in 1993, which means the restoration had to preserve the look and feel of the original.

"It's the same, except it looks brand new," Bieri said.

What Is Changing

The Menu

The kitchen had to be completely reconfigured. Bieri says the initial menu will be simpler than before, with plans to expand over time.

What will definitely be there:

  • The famous crunchy grouper sandwich (the best seller — it is not going anywhere)
  • Pub burger
  • Scallops au gratin
  • Steaks (ribeye and filet)
  • Fish (swordfish, salmon, grouper, snapper)
  • Shrimp

Bieri has also hinted at bringing back beer-battered shrimp — one of the original menu items from 1978 that was dropped 40 years ago.

The Sunset Views

This is the complicated part. A 12-foot sand dune now blocks the restaurant's famous sunset views. The dune was created by a beach renourishment project, and the Mucky Duck has filed a lawsuit against the Captiva Erosion Prevention District, arguing the restaurant has historic rights to the Gulf views.

The lawsuit is ongoing. Bieri cannot comment on it publicly.

For now, the outdoor seating is still available, but the sunset experience may be different than you remember — at least until the legal situation is resolved.

Beer and Wine

Beer and wine will be served. The Mucky Duck has always been more pub than cocktail bar, and that is not changing.

A 50-Year Legacy

The Mucky Duck opened in 1976, which makes 2026 its 50th anniversary year. The restaurant was built in what was once the old Gulf View Inn at the end of Andy Rosse Lane on Captiva Island.

Over five decades, it became more than a restaurant. It became a tradition. Families have been coming here for generations. Proposals have happened on that beach. Ashes have been scattered in the sunset. It is woven into the fabric of island life in a way that few restaurants anywhere can claim.

That is why the rebuild matters. It is not just a business reopening — it is a piece of Captiva coming home.

How to Get There

The Mucky Duck is on Captiva Island, about a 20-minute drive north from central Sanibel.

📍 11546 Andy Rosse Lane, Captiva Island, FL 33924

From Sanibel, take Sanibel-Captiva Road north across Blind Pass Bridge onto Captiva, then continue to Andy Rosse Lane. Parking is limited — arrive early, especially for sunset.

Stay Updated

The Mucky Duck has not announced an exact reopening date yet. Follow their Facebook page for the latest updates.

They are also hiring staff ahead of the reopening. If you are interested, stop by 11546 Andy Rosse Lane between 9 AM and 2 PM, Monday through Friday.

The Bottom Line

The Mucky Duck surviving three hurricanes and coming back looking brand new is the most Sanibel-Captiva story there is. It is stubbornness, love for the island, and a refusal to let the storms win.

When that door opens again — and it will be soon — it will be one of the biggest moments in the islands' post-hurricane recovery. Get there early. Order the grouper sandwich. And raise a glass to 50 years of the Mucky Duck.

We will update this post when the official reopening date is announced.
