Biking Sanibel Island — The Best Way to See the Island

By Sanibel Island Explorer · 2 min read

Why Biking Is the Move

Sanibel Island has something most Florida barrier islands don't — a dedicated, connected network of shared-use paths that covers practically the entire island. Over 25 miles of paved trails wind through canopy-covered roads, past wildlife preserves, along the Gulf, and through quiet residential neighborhoods.

You can bike from the lighthouse to Blind Pass without ever sharing a lane with a car, which is why it belongs near the top of any things to do on Sanibel list.

The Routes

Periwinkle Way Path (East to West)

The main artery. Runs the length of Periwinkle Way from the lighthouse area to Tarpon Bay Road. You'll pass restaurants, shops, and the intersection of island life. Flat, shaded, and well-maintained.

Sanibel-Captiva Road (West Side)

Continues west from Tarpon Bay Road all the way to Blind Pass (the bridge to Captiva). This stretch is quieter, more residential, and passes the entrance to Ding Darling. Beautiful morning ride.

Ding Darling Wildlife Drive

The 4-mile Wildlife Drive through J.N. "Ding" Darling National Wildlife Refuge is open to bikes even on days when it's closed to cars (Fridays). Biking it is the best way to see wildlife — you're quieter, slower, and closer to the action. Read our full Ding Darling guide if you want to plan the route around tides and peak animal activity.

Bike Rentals

Several shops rent bikes on the island:

  • Billy's Rentals — Multiple locations, biggest fleet
  • Finnimore's Cycle Shop — Near the lighthouse
  • Expect to pay $15-25/day for a standard cruiser, $40-60 for an e-bike

Rules of the Path

  1. Helmets are recommended but not legally required for adults
  2. Stay on the path — Don't ride on the road when a path is available
  3. Yield to pedestrians — Always
  4. Use lights after dark — Required by law
  5. Watch for wildlife — Gators occasionally cross paths near Ding Darling

Pro Tips

  • Morning rides (7-9 AM) are the best — cooler, less traffic, more wildlife activity, especially if you want to pair the ride with the stops in our Sanibel Causeway guide on your way in or out of the island
  • Bring water — There are very few water fountains along the paths
  • Bug spray in summer — The no-see-ums come out in the evening
  • Lock your bike — Even on Sanibel, bikes occasionally walk away from restaurant racks

Renting a bike for a day costs less than parking at one beach. And you'll see ten times more of the island. If you want trail ideas beyond this article, our biking page is a good next stop. It's not even close.
